Lindsay Rosenwald’s Abilities
It was in the fall of 1995 when I answered the New York Time’s advertisement that stated that an up and coming venture capital firm was looking for a CEO to assist its specialty medical centers.
I was escorted into Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald’s office for the interview, where I then sat for about six hours, watching him take several phone calls simultaneously, assist endless rounds of visitors, effectively directing trades as he observed the market activity on one of four terminals set up for this purpose. It was at the end of the day that he let me know I was hired and that the next morning I would be able to come back and discuss the details.
It was later that evening that I discussed the events of my day with my brother, Tom. He was ecstatic, and declared “Do you have any idea who Lindsay Rosenwald is?!” To say that this meeting with Dr Rosenwald changed my life would be an understatement.
Lindsay Rosenwald gave me a chance that few others would have given me. My knowledge of the public markets was limited. What I had to offer was an understanding of nutritional concepts. Still, he took me under his wing and introduced me to venture capital, financing, public companies, and merchant banking. The entire experience was intense, fascinating, exciting, and it changed my life.
I am eternally grateful for Lindsay’s assistance. He was a teacher to me as well as a friend. He taught me incredibly valuable lessons that I still cite on a regular basis today: pick a direction and stay focused; even though pioneers may get the arrows, the settlers get the land; it’s better to own a tenth of a gold mine than all of the shaft; and don’t worry about gossip – it’s just another form of praise.
Lindsay Rosenwald is a smart and relentless man who works hard. He’s an easy man to admire for these traits alone, but more than these I admire his foresight and his ability to see potential in things. This ranges from potential CEOs like me to companies to invest in and more. He not only sees that potential but he helps to provide the environment where it can thrive and where people can truly reach their full potential. Whether or not Dr. Rosenwald is ever given appropriate thanks, he has launched a multitude of successful careers. Even if we all had talent, it was his nurturing and insight that allowed us to reach our potential.
Lindsay Rosenwald has been a helping hand to many. Whether it’s his investment in companies financially, help directly in setup, assistance through advice, or the many public companies that he created which have since given countless additional opportunities.
